As the new trends are showing, traditional English-speaking countries are no longer the top destinations for Indian students. Indian students have been going to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for higher education. But, with the changing global education landscape, these countries are witnessing a sharp decline in the Indian students applying for higher education. China, on the other hand, is capitalizing on the opportunity by easing the visa process. Additionally, earlier, the dragon has reduced the visa fees, which include student visa fees.
The latest visa data for 2024 is out, and all three top higher education destinations, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Canada, have reported a decline in student visa applications from India. After the pandemic era, this is the first continuous decline.
Canada has reported the biggest fall, with a 32% drop in the study permits issued to Indian students. In the year 2023, the country issued 2.78 lakh permits, while in 2024, the number fell to 1.89 lakh permits only. Similarly, the USA has also seen a decline in the F-1 student visas. In the year 2023, the F-1 Visas were 1.31 lakhs. However, in the year 2024, the number declined to just 86,110. The same is being reported by the United Kingdom and Australia.
For over a decade, Indian students’ preferred choice for higher education was these countries. But now the scene is changing in favour of China, especially for MBBS in China. Experts attribute the shift to the economic uncertainties in Western countries, geopolitical issues, and stricter immigration policies.
The Dragon is sensing this vacuum and is gearing up to woo Indian students looking for higher education abroad. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong has confirmed on social media that over 85000 visas have been issued to Indians in the year 2025. The number includes student visas, business visas, and tourist visas as well. However, the exact number of student visas couldn't be ascertained for now. The number is a testament to the growing engagement between the two rival countries.
China has significantly reduced visa fees for Indian students, a move to attract more Indian students. College fees in China is already a deciding factor for international students. An MBBS in China costs between 25 lakhs to 45 lakhs, which is way affordable compared to India.
The steps are seen in line with the changing diplomatic relations, which took a halt during the COVID-19 era. Both countries now intend to deepen the educational ties with the growing economic relations.
Ved Prakash Beniwal, a prominent education consultant and director of Jagvimal Consultants, said, "In a time when traditional Western destinations are tightening their policies, China has emerged as a progressive and welcoming alternative for Indian students. With reduced visa fees, streamlined application processes, and globally recognized programs especially in fields like medicine—China is showing that it values educational exchange. I believe this is not just a strategic move but a sincere gesture of academic partnership that Indian students are beginning to appreciate and trust."
As we observe the traditional education centers struggle with the policy shifts, China’s forward-looking steps are going to change the higher education world. It is expected that more and more Indian students will look forward to Chinese universities for higher education now.
