The history of Vitebsk State Medical University dates back to November, 1934. A premier government institute in the Republic of Belarus is located in the city of Vitebsk, Belarus. It started admitting international students in 1981. With its existence of around 75 years, the academic curriculum of the university is developed and maintained in accordance with the European Qualification framework. It is a state owned university and maintains high level of education. The university has gained fame among the students because of the quality of education it offers, low tuition and hostel fee as compared to other countries of the world offering MBBS abroad. More than 7000 students have graduated from the university including the international students.

The university has 20 associated state hospitals within the city to provide the clinical training and exposure to its students. Focused on European standard of Education, the university has 10:1 student-teacher ratio. Vitebsk State Medical University has maintained its high rating in the world and the degrees granted by the university are recognized by World Health Organization (WHO), Sri Lankan Medical Council (SLMC), Maldivian Medical & Dental Council (MMDC), General Medical Council (GMC-UK), Medical Council of India, Australia Medical Council (AMC), Education Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMC- USA).

Imparting quality of education and building great future doctors is the prime focus of the university. For the purpose, the education process is conducted by approximate 500 trained staff members including 50 professors, 150 associate professors, 70 Doctors and 180 candidates from different fields of Science.  The extensive library has a large collection of books written in English, Russia and other foreign languages. The advanced and technologically sound, uniquely built electronic library is well equipped with computer systems and internet connection.

The new building for Vitebsk Medical University was constructed in 1959 and also the Faculty of Pharmacy became operational in the same year. Soon the university also constructed 2 new hostels for students, a sports complex and a dining building. The Faculty of General Medicine and Faculty of Advanced Medical Training were established in years in 1981 and 1984 respectively. The University also has a dentistry faculty which came into being in 2001. The university now has 7 different faculties with overall 7000 students. Vitebsk State Medical Institute earned the status of University in 1988. A total of 63 departments have been established in the university with 56 doctors of sciences working for them.
