Geomel State Medical University, Belarus

Formed in 1990 as per the resolution of the Council of Ministers and Order of the Minister of Health of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, it is the youngest of the four medical universities in Belarus. It main campus of the university is situated in Gomel city with 18 adjacent medical sites. The university has an academic employed staff of around 600 professors and assistant professors with more than one third of these holding MD/ PhD degree. There are 34 departments 5 profile research laboratory and a central research laboratory within the university. The well equipped university library has a rich written material, internet access and three reading halls thus providing a peaceful space for the students to study. The advance medical technologies are effective for the diagnosis and treatment in the fields of cardiology, immunology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, hematology and oncology as well as other medical specialties. Since its foundation, the university has prepared more than 2000 doctors from different parts of the globe practicing successfully to serve humanity.   

Gomel State Medical University aims at continuous improvement, advanced technology, latest equipments and modern teaching to train the students for better worldly needs. It is because of this that the university holds a leading position in the field of medical education, medical science and health care. There are four different specialties at the university namely General Medicine (MBBS), Nursing, Stomatology and Pharmacy teaching students from different parts of the world. Currently the university has trained more than 500 students from 36 nationalities.

The course duration is 6 years where in the first 3 years students study the basics of anatomy, physics, chemistry, biology, histology, philosophy, Latin and the regional language. Starting from the 4th to 6th year, the studies are conducted at the hospitals where the students’ master diseases and other subjects like obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, neurology, pediatrics etc. Graduates from the university practice under the skilled Doctors to gain an experience.

The city of Gomel experiences a humid climate with severe winters and warm summers. Summers are comfortable with winters being long, freezing, windy and dry. January is the coldest month with June being the wettest; August is a warm month a pleasant weather. The annual temperature usually ranges from -7°C in the winters to 25°C in the summers.
