Curtin University's history can be traced back to the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT), which was established in 1967. The university was named after John Curtin, the Prime Minister of Australia from 1941 to 1945.

WAIT was renamed the Curtin University of Technology in 1986, and in 1987 it merged with the Western Australian College of Advanced Education (WACAE). The university has since grown to become one of Australia's leading research universities.
