The university began as a part of Birmingham’s Municipal Technical School in the 19th century, then it became a separate college of Bakery, Catering, Domestic Science, and associated studies under the control of Birmingham City Council in 1957.

After moving from Brasshouse Passage to Summer Row in 1967, the institution became Birmingham College of Food, Tourism, and Creative Studies (BCFTCS). Again, its name changed to University College Birmingham in 2007.
