The university was established in 1993 by merging two oldest institutes of higher education of Veliky Novgorod. At present, it consists of 8 educational institutes viz., Medical Education, Humanities, Polytechnic, Continuous Pedagogical Education, Electronic and Information Systems, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Administration and Economy, and four secondary vocational education colleges. All the mentioned courses were not available at first but came into being following the queries and demands of students. The university is attended by many overseas students.
