About Exam

About Test

The International English Language Testing System (General) is the most popular English language test. It measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work in locations where English is used to communicate. Some major countries that accept General are the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The test assesses one’s listening, reading, writing, and speaking abilities in less than three hours. There are two types of General: Academic and General Training. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing sections differs depending on which test you take. The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all General tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks between them. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Why take the test?

Being one of the prime exams for testing English proficiency, the General exam is recognized by more than 11,000 universities globally. With over 1000 test locations in more than 140 countries, it is accessible for most people. The General test isn’t just essential for pursuing work or studying in foreign countries and helps students hone their English speaking and writing skills. Good command of English helps visa granting authorities ensure that one can easily communicate with the locals and won’t face major communication barriers later.

There are two types of the General test: General Academic and General General Training. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training. The General General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing sections differs depending on which test you take.

As per British Council, scoring a 9 in the exam means that you are an “expert” in English, while getting an 8 shows that you are “very good” and so on. Generally, the test score varies from 1 to 9, i.e. non-user to expert and 0 for “did not attempt”. Register for our Jagvimal Live classes and get an General score between 6-9.

The General results are valid for two years from the result declaration date, but it also depends on the organisation to set their validity for different purposes.
